Just another Sunday at the Williams' Farm

I knew these chickens would come in handy.  They are PERFECT for babysitting.  Who needs toys when you have chickens?  Cora Grace is our new chicken handler. Normally when Cora comes to visit she tells me "you need some toys at your house."  Not today!  I did have a hard time getting her out of the chicken coop though.

You can see Travis in the background.  I didn't mean to get his backside, but he is being a super awesome uncle hunting for grub worms so Cora can feed them to the chickens.
A girl can't play in the chicken coop unless her nails are done!  Cora got her nails done so naturally, Molly needed hers done as well.  "Linny, mine, Linny mine!"  Luckily she is a very patient 2 year old as evidenced by the fact that she waited until her nails were dry before putting her thumb back in her mouth.

Bugs...

My chickens love bugs. This morning, before I got in my car to go to work, I noticed a ton of junebugs lying around.  I picked them up, put them in a Tupperware dish and had Travis toss them in the coop.  They loved them.  Scramble, however, is a little on the slow side, but she's so pretty.  Travis and I say that to each other when we say something stupid, "you're so pretty."  Scramble couldn't figure out that there was a pile of bugs that she could choose from.  Instead, she chased the others around for theirs.
Last night, while I was inside the chicken coop feeding grub worms to my chickens (they love them), my neighbor was staring at me like I was crazy.  Come to find out, he does think I'm crazy because I was sitting in the chicken coop with the chickens.  He must be jealous.  : ) Not only was I spoiling my chickens with grub worms, I was trying to take their 7 week photos!  It's hard to take pictures of moving chickens.  You have to get right up in their business.

Doomsday Chickens

Have you seen Doomsday Preppers on the National Geographic Channel?  1. It's awesome. 2. Travis and I might be doomsday preppers.  Our chickens are our safety net once the Obama zombies start to take over and the economy crashes... at least we will be able to eat chicken!

Uptown girls...

Uptown girls (Billy Joel singing voice) She's been living in her uptown world. I bet she's never had a backstreet guy. I bet her momma never told her why.

Look at these fancy chickens!!  Aren't they so grown up?  If you didn't know already, I am about to tell you how much of a dork I am.  I posted this picture on Backyardchickens.com and someone responded that my chickens looked like "uptown girls."  This person the posted a picture of her "barnyard girls" which looked a little ratty.  I guess I never thought about how pretty my little chickas were.

Out they go...

STRESS!!!!  I know what it feels like to let your children go off to college now.  I am about 35 yards from the chicken coop where my sweet babies are staying their first night and I am stressing out.  Not to mention it is my anniversary today.  I really hope it doesn't also become the anniversary of the death(s) of my first chickens!!  They grow up so fast these days...

We put them out in Coop-Deville tonight and they didn't like it.  (Trust me, I know, I am the chicken whisperer)  So, I got in the coop with them.  It helped.  They snuggled in my lap and hid in my arm pits.  : )  Then I put their heat lamp out there and that made them feel more at home.   They just couldn't see their new digs.

Coop-Deville

Do you know what I need?  A BABY MONITOR!  No wait, I wouldn't be able to watch them get eaten LIVE!

Coop-Deville did get a tin roof today while I sang "TIIIIIIN ROOF, RUSTED!" ("Love Shack")   So at least the children, I mean chickens, will be safe from the rain.

Coop-Deville - Week 5

Nesting Box
Ok we're REALLY almost done now. Travis has been working so hard.  I think the coop looks really good.  It looks so good I've decided to name it COOP-DEVILLE, because it is the Cadillac of chicken coops.
You can see we have a ramp (I built all by myself) leading to the coop where the girls will sleep, but they haven't exactly figured it out yet.   (Please see my next post about Chicken Myths to explain why, hint: chickens are intellectually challenged)  This really and truly might be their last night in the garage.  It needs to be because they are making a MESS!  It is disgusting.  I still love them though.
We love them so much we hung out with them Friday night instead of hanging out with our friends.  Ok let's get real, we didn't have any plans anyway.  I did not put Scramble on my head by the way.  She jumped up there all by herself.  And today, she did it again.  She walked right up to me with her curious eyes.  I thought she was recognizing me and listening to my voice.  Nope, she was like "oh yeah, I like it up there on your head".... JUMP!
